Zones of Regulation
At St Stephen’s, we have introduced the Zones of Regulation. Self-regulation is the ability to focus our attention, control our emotions and manage our thinking, behaviour and feelings. The first step to self-regulation is to identify how our brain and body feels. All feelings and zones are ok, but we make other people comfortable when we are in an expected zone at an expected time.
Using the zones helps us to identify our feelings, levels of alertness, understand how our behaviour influences those around us and it gives us the tools to manage our feelings in different situations.

A person who can self-regulate is able to:
- Remain calm in a stressful situation
- Cheer themselves up after disappointment
- Know when they are experiencing an emotional overload and adjust
Within each classroom, there is a Zones of Regulation display to help with self-regulation in school. Below there are lots of different resources that you can use with your parents to help your self-regulation at home!
If you or your family at home have any further questions or concerns then please come and speak to Miss Bedworth, our Senior Mental Health Lead or Mrs Kirkwood, our Pastoral Lead.
