Year 6 Transition

Starting secondary school

Children who are due to start secondary school in September 2026, born 1 September 2014 to 31 August 2015 (or in year 6) will receive a letter via their current school, which contains information on the registration and application processes.

How to apply

You can apply online from 1 September 2025 until midnight on 31 October 2025. Please read our secondary schools brochure and view a map of all the Warrington secondary schools before applying.

Please have your letter and information sheet to hand when starting your online application form. You will also need your council tax account reference number which you can find on your council tax bill.

Making a preference for a school

When you apply you can list three schools for your child. We advise you to choose three schools in order of preference and list them in your application. Listing only one will not guarantee getting a place at that school. If you list only one school and we are unable to meet your preference, you will be given a place at the next nearest school to your home which has a place available.

Please find links below to the secondary schools that our Year 6 pupils transitioned to in September 2025.

  • Cardinal Newman Catholic High School (feeder high school)
  • St Gregory’s Catholic High School
  • Birchwood High School
  • Padgate Academy
  • King’s Leadership Academy

By following the links to the right hand side of this page you will have access to the following:

  • Open Evening information & booking slots
  • Contact information of school staff where you can ask questions
  • Some schools have virtual tours available
  • Letters and information that will be useful for you and your child
  • Information about the school that you can familiarise yourself with and share with your child

Getting an offer of a place

We send offers to all on-time applications by email. Email offers will be sent to the address given on the online application form from 8am on 2 March 2026.

Applicants who applied using the Citizen Portal can also view their offer by logging back into the Citizen Portal and clicking school admissions.

All applicants who applied after the closing date, 31 October 2025, will receive their offer via letter. Letters will be posted on 2 March 2026, so please allow time for delivery.

Any child who is not offered their preferred school(s), will receive a letter which provides the reason for refusal and further information. These letters will be posted to the home address on 2 March 2026, so please allow time for delivery.
